Maggie Newman

August 5, 1934 — March 18, 2022

Maggie Lee Davis Newman, of Castroville (formerly of Uvalde and Knippa), passed away peacefully on March 18, 2022, at the age of 87.

Maggie was born August 5, 1934, in Uvalde, Texas, the daughter of Henry Irvin and Louise (Mear) Davis. She grew up in Uvalde where she met Charles W. (“Charlie”) Newman of La Pryor.  They were married on July 14, 1951. They lived in Uvalde for a few years and then work took them to Bisbee, Arizona and Alamogordo, New Mexico.  They ended up back in Uvalde in 1966 and lived there until 2002 when they moved to Knippa following her stroke in November of 2000.

Maggie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charlie, her sister, Henrietta “Penny” Davis Ivy and brother-in-law, Harrison Ivy, and sister-in-law, Janice (Sweeten) Davis.

She is survived by her children, David Allen Newman (Kathy) of Junction, Henry Irvin Newman (Kathy) of Angleton, Charles Wayne Newman (Judy) of Lytle, and Jan Newman Tschirhart (Bill) of Castroville; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; her sisters - Bobbie Jean (Robert) Landrum of New Braunfels, Deborah Burkett (Roy) of Dickinson, one brother, John Wesley Davis of Leakey; one aunt, Billie Jean Davis of Uvalde; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Maggie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, sister-in- law, aunt, cousin, and friend.  Besides her family, especially her grandchildren whom she adored, she absolutely loved dancing and visiting with friends and family and was always quick to pick up the phone to call and check on those she loved.  She was also always ready to play games like dominos, canasta, yahtzee, uno, and anything else brought out.  She was an amazing cook and baker. She also pretty much solely kept Hallmark in business as there was never a holiday of any sort, or birthday, or just for no reason other than she was thinking of you that she didn’t send a card.

A joint graveside service will be held at Leakey Floral Cemetery at 11 am on Friday, March 25, 2022, as Charlie (who passed on August 9, 2020) wanted to be buried with Maggie. A gathering will be held at the American Legion Hall, 236 Mountain in Leakey immediately following.
