Alejandro Castillo

Alejandro (Role) Castillo, age 101, of Uvalde, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on August 16 at Audie Murphy VA Hospital in San Antonio. He was born on September 30, 1917 in Uvalde to Eusebio and Josefa (Gonzales) Castillo. He married Isabel (Chavelita) Rodriguez in March of 1945 in Uvalde. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years; his parents; sisters, Rosaura Gonzales, Carolina Antu, Amelia Garza, Dolores Flores; special niece, Connie Castillo Ibarra; brothers, Gilberto Castillo, Eusebio (Chevita) Castillo, Jr., Alberto (Beto) Castillo, Guadalupe Castillo, and son-in-law, Ben Stratton.

Mr. Castillo is survived by daughters; Gloria Ortiz of San Antonio, Olivia Butman and husband Bill of Hutto, Bertha Stratton of Houston, and son; Alex Castillo of Uvalde, 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews; special niece, Ester Gomez, and provider Naida Arizmendi.

Mr. Castillo was a World War II Combat Infantryman and Purple Heart recipient. He participated in the North African campaign, the Sicilian campaign serving under the command of General George S. Patton, and the Italian campaign where he was wounded in action. He served with the US Army 3rd Infantry Division, 15th Regiment, Company G. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star Medal, African-Middle Eastern-European Campaign Medal with three Battle Stars and two arrowheads, Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal.

Mr. Castillo was the last remaining grandchild of Yndalecio and Teresita (Perez) Gonzales of Montell, prior to his death.

Combat Infantryman to have the honor as pallbearers will be, Ernest (June) Campos, Ruben Cuellar, David Ross, Julio Solis of Spofford, Joe Villareal and George Garcia of Del Rio. Honorary pallbearers are Tony Ovalle, Mingo Rodriguez, Nick Gonzales, Luis Juarez, Nino Martinez, and grandsons, Darrell Ortiz, Duane Ortiz, Billy Butman, Matthew Butman, Spencer Stratton, and Stuart Stratton.

Military Honors will be rendered by the United States Army Honor Guard and the American Legion Post #479

Visitation will begin on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary, followed by a rosary at 7:00 p.m.

A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, August 21, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.  Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
