Mary Rosario Garcia, 84, a beloved family matriarch and longtime member of the Uvalde community, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her devoted family, on October 23, 2026, in San Antonio, Texas. She was born on July 19, 1942, in Uvalde, Texas.
Strong, caring, and vibrant, Mary devoted her life to her family. One of thirteen siblings, she helped care for the younger children from an early age, beginning a lifetime of looking after those she loved. Affectionately known as “Meemaw” and “Mimzy” to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she leaves a legacy of love spanning generations.
Mary and her beloved husband, Gonzalo “Chalo” Garcia, began their courtship through love notes translated by trusted friends: she spoke English, and he spoke Spanish. They met at the Coca-Cola bottling company to walk to the movies. On one outing, Mary’s five-year-old sister repeatedly tried to squeeze between them as they held hands, a memorable interruption to their romance. They continued exchanging letters for many months away from Uvalde. When they were both back in town, they caught sight of one another across the street. From that reunion, their courtship grew into a commitment to marriage and a life of raising a family together. They celebrated nearly 70 memorable and wonderful years of marriage.
Many in Uvalde will remember Mary from her 25 years at First State Bank of Uvalde, where she worked her way up to lead her department. A familiar and beloved face around town, she knew people by name and proudly introduced her children and grandchildren to colleagues and customers.
Mary also gave generously of her time, volunteering for more than a decade at the local Happy Kitchen at Our Health Clinic in Uvalde. Her dedication was recognized with several Volunteer of the Year awards.
Music brought Mary joy throughout her life. In her younger years, she loved dancing in petticoat dresses to the latest hits and visiting the local drugstore jukebox. Later, she filled Saturday mornings with music as her children helped clean the house. A proud Texan, she especially enjoyed country music and Blake Shelton. Family and neighbors will also remember her tasty salsa and the many low-calorie recipes she lovingly shared at gatherings.
Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Gonzalo Longoria Garcia.
She is survived by her children and their spouses: Yolanda and Johnny Joe Moreno of Uvalde; Suzi and Thomas Rubio of Bennett, Colorado; Jim and Mayela Garcia of Uvalde; DeAnna and Joel Sanchez of Canyon Lake; and Lisa and Gabriel Salazar of Uvalde. She also leaves behind her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her wisdom, resilience, and joy.
Mary will be remembered for the love she gave her family, the care she extended to her neighbors, and the music and memories she shared. Her presence will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 27, 2026 at 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a rosary at 7:00 pm. A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church in Uvalde, Texas, followed by a reception at The Local Fix at 12:00 p.m.
Pallbearers will include Jaime Garcia, Jr., Jacob Garcia, Nicholas Salazar, Joshua Asay, Gerald Campos, Jr., and Favian Torres.
