Martha Talavera

May 17, 1946 — November 30, 2020

Uvalde

Martha C. Talavera of Uvalde passed away on Monday, November 30, 2020, at Uvalde Memorial Hospital at the age of 74. She was born on May 17, 1946, in Lerdo, Durango, Mexico to Marcos and Augustina (Gutierrez) Cardenas.

From her humble beginnings in Mexico to building a good life in South Texas, Martha, or “Grandma Martha,” as so many knew her, had a heart full of love, a strong faith in God, a larger than life personality, and a unique sense of humor that kept her family and friends laughing and smiling. She was a wonderful cook, an incredibly talented seamstress, and the most amazing mom and grandma. Grandma Martha loved many things in life, like cooking and enjoying delicious food, listening and dancing to great music, playing bingo with her friends and, most of all, her family.

Grandma Martha played a vital role in the lives of her grandchildren and some grandnieces and grandnephews, going above and beyond the typical role of a grandmother. From hand-sewing one of a kind Halloween costumes, to traveling miles away from home to take care of “her babies,” her love for the children in the family knew no end. For that, her family will be eternally grateful. Her babies were, and always will be, her heart and soul—her everything. She helped to raise several generations and shape them with her care, lessons, and guidance, instilling the strong values that helped her succeed. Grandma Martha leaves a legacy through her life and good works that will live on in the hearts of those she impacted for the rest of their lives.

She is survived by her daughter; Patricia Elena Garcia and husband, Rafael of Harlingen, Texas; two sons, Ricardo Leopoldo Talavera, Jr. and wife, Judith, of Corpus Christi, Texas; and Jorge Talavera and wife, Brenda, of Pflugerville, Texas; sister, Guadalupe Avalos and husband, Martin of Piedras Negras, Mexico; brothers, Marcos Cardenas, Jr. and wife, Martha, Francisco Cardenas and wife, Maria, Arnulfo Cardenas, Jose Manuel Cardenas and wife, Guadalupe and Gilberto Cardenas all of Eagle Pass; grandchildren; Amber Lynn Garcia, Armando Rafael Garcia, III, Amanda Nicole Garcia, Cameron Alexander Talavera, Nicolas Andres Talavera, Analysa Martha Talavera, James Anthony Talavera and Matthew Richard Talavera; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by parents; husband, Ricardo Leopoldo Talavera; sister, Sylvia Cardenas, and an infant brother.

Visitation will begin on Thursday at 12:00 p.m. followed by a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary.  A funeral service will be held on Friday, December 4, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
