Merna Marinel Bennett of Uvalde passed away on February 15, 2007 at her residence at the age of 84 after a battle with cancer. She was born on November 23, 1922 in Brownwood, TX to John Waldo and Elva Baxter Carson. She attended school in Dimmitt, Batesville and La Pryor, and graduated from Uvalde High School in 1939. She attended Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth and the University of Texas in Austin. In 1957 she graduated from Southwest Texas Junior College with an Associate of Arts degree. She married Benjamin Holloway Bennett on May 9, 1943 at the 1st Christian Church in Hamilton, TX. They lived and ranched in Batesville until 1951, when they moved to Uvalde, continuing to own and operate the Bennett Arrowhead Ranch until their retirement. She is survived by her sister, Bettie Belle Brown of Batesville; her children, son, Benjamin Baxter Bennett and wife, Carmen of San Antonio; daughter-in-law, Mary Sue Laffere and husband, Don of Uvalde; son, Blaine Bennett and wife, Nancy of Uvalde; and son, Farris Bennett and wife, Cecily of Uvalde; one brother-in-law, Bill Bennett and wife, Laverne of Coleman; and two sisters-in-law, Madge Bell of Austin and Barbara Weideman and husband, John of Granbury; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-granchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; step-father, Fred Duck Boswell of Batesville; one son, Fred Carson Rusty Bennett of Batesville; and one brother-in-law, Bernard Brown of Batesville. A private graveside service was held in Hillcrest Cemetery at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 18, 2007. A memorial service followed at 3:00 PM at the 1st United Methodist Church. Rev. Scott Bradford officiated. Pallbearers were Rusty Bennett, Mickey Gerdes, Clint Laffere, Will Brown, George Franklin, and Willie Edwards. Honorary pallbearers were Lewis Bracy, George Horner, Dusty Huddleston, Joe Bill Carper, Alan Carmichael, John Shudde, Roy Kothmann, Charlie Griffin, Gary Griffin, and Clark Ward.
