Margie Moreno

Maria Margarita “Margie” Moreno, 81, went to be with the Lord on Aug. 11, 2023.

She was born Aug. 6, 1942, in Newgulf, Texas, to Clara (Ponce) and Carlos Ernesto Solis.

She graduated from Valley Baptist Academy in Harlingen, Texas, in 1963. She was a part of the school’s softball team, a catcher and skillful batter. It was during her time at the religious institute that she met her future husband, Julian Moreno.

The couple wed on August 22, 1964, in Houston, Texas.

She worked as a daycare provider for more than two decades, though, even after her retirement, she continued to care for children at Primera Iglesia Bautista Church in Uvalde, where she was a long-time member.

She loved music and was a member of the church choir and community choir during the joint service for Thanksgiving. She shared a love for mariachi with her grandchild, Josh, and her favorite singer was Vicente Fernandez.

She took her coffee black with sugar and enjoyed cooking for her family, especially Sunday lunch after church service. She had a hearty laugh and contagious smile. To know her was to love her.

She is survived by two daughters, Cindy Castillo and husband, Victor, and Margie Montalvo and husband, Jose, all of Uvalde; son, Andrew Moreno and wife, Dora, of Andrews, Texas; two sisters, Adelina Cuellar and Maria Elena Shumann, both of Houston, Texas; 12 grandchildren, Kimberly Mata-Rubio and husband, Felix, Analyse Mata and husband, Brandon Mendoza, Adrian Avila, Lysset Medina, Josh Cordova, Alissandra Moreno, Andrew Moreno Jr., Mateo Montalvo, Noah Montalvo, Elijah Montalvo, Cydnie Castillo, and Audrey Lee; and eight great-grandchildren, Kalisa Barboza, David Falcon III, Jahleela Rubio, Julian Rubio, Brandon Mendoza, Derek Mendoza, Mary-Claire Mendoza, and Cannon Lee.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Carlos Ernesto Solis Jr. and Efrain Solis; son, Homer Moreno; and great-granddaughter Alexandria “Lexi” Rubio.

A prayer service was held Aug. 13, 2023, at 6 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. A funeral service was held on Aug. 14, 2023, at 10 a.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. Cremation is under the direction of Rushing Estes Knowles Mortuary.
