Jack Preston, Sr.

Jack Bane Preston, 88, of Utopia died May 4, 2010, in Castroville.
Funeral services will be held Friday, May 7, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Utopia Methodist
Church with the Rev. Robert Richardz and the Rev. Gerald Harvey
officiating.
Interment will follow in Jones Cemetery.
He was born on March 20, 1922, in Fort Worth to Montgomery Monte and
Ernie Salina Ayres Preston.
He married Ruth Allene Tyra on July 14, 1946, in Fort Worth.
He grew up on a ranch at Stiles, west of San Angelo. He later moved to San
Angelo and on to Sheffield, while his father started training horses for
the Elrod family.
Preston attended school in Iraan. He graduated from high school in Sabinal.
He joined the U.S. Marines Corps in November of 1942, and was a survivor
of the Battle of Tarawa. He was a buck sergeant in the Second Marines
Division, Second Regiment.
After returning from World War II and marrying, he and his wife moved to
Utopia.
He was a rancher and saddlemaker.
He and his wife ranched 13 miles north of Utopia. They later moved just
south of Utopia, where Preston opened a successful saddle shop and made
custom saddles and accessories for people all over the U.S.
According to the family, Preston was very artistic and could do anything
from carpentry, welding or just about anything he was asked to do.
He was a member of Utopia Methodist Church and a 50year member of the
Masonic Lodge.
Preston was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife one daughter, Ruth Ann Hunter and husband,
Larry, of Lubbock one son, Jack Preston Jr. and wife, Becky, of San
Antonio four granddaughters, Wende Preston Bridger and husband, Gary, of
San Antonio, Holly R. Hunter Bratland and husband, Tim, of Willow Lake,
S.D., Jodee Preston Welch of San Antonio and Laura E. Hunter of Lubbock
and two greatgranddaughters, Morgan Hunter Bratland and Katelynn Welch.
Pallbearers will be David Rainey, Lonnie Shelton, Michael Walsh, Daniel
Gring, Lawrence Greer and Frank Resuriz.
