Humberto "Beto" Torres, Jr.

 

Humberto Torres Jr., 34, of Uvalde, Texas, passed away suddenly in Abeline, Texas on November 21, 2023.

He was born on October 18, 1989, to Humberto Torres Sr. and Maria Garcia in Laredo, Texas.

Beto graduated from Uvalde High School in 2008. He graduated magna cum laude from Southwest Texas Junior College and went on to study Early Childhood Education at Brigham Young University with a minor in TESOL. He received a Master of Education degree in School Administration from Sul Ross State University. He was pursuing a doctoral degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Beto was active in the Boy Scouts of America where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and was a member of the Order of the Arrow. Along with his father, he earned the Wood Badge, an advanced leadership course open only to scouting volunteers and professionals. He served as an assistant in local troops and previously acted as district commissioner.

Beto was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and served faithfully in many leadership positions within the church. He was honored to have served a two-year mission in Tennessee and Brazil. The Gospel of Jesus Christ was at the center of his life, and he endeavored to live by its principles.

After completing his education, Beto returned home to Uvalde to begin working for the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District. He held several positions including teacher, instructional coach, and most recently Assistant Principal of Uvalde High School where he was able to share his love for music and education.

He is survived by Humberto Torres Sr. (Guadalupe Torres) of Uvalde; Maria Garcia of Laredo; Stephanie DeVictoria (Aaron DeVictoria), nephew and niece Noah and Lana DeVictoria of Corpus Christi; Robert Torres (Karli Torres) of Rexburg, Idaho; Nataly Mendoza, the love of his life, of Lehi, Utah; and so many special loved ones whom he considered family, along with the Uvalde community.

A viewing will be held at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary for the public on Wednesday, November 29 from 3 p.m.-9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (420 Ham Lane, Uvalde, Texas 78801) at 10 a.m. Graveside service following the funeral service at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes for donations to be made in Beto’s name to the Uvalde High School Band Booster or the UHS Saucy Lady Lobos. Contact the high school for more information.
