Gregorio “Sonny” Cordova was born on December 19, 1935, in La Pryor, Texas, to Maria Flores Cordova and Pedro Cordova. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Pedro Cordova and Otila Vaughn, and his wife Mona Cordova, his son Paul P. Cordova and his great grandson Briggs Cole Martin. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Mary Helen Herrera Cordova and his sisters Irene Stone and Maria Cordova, his sons Peter G. Cordova (and his wife Susan Cordova), Joseph A. “Sonny” Cordova (and his wife Aracely Cordova), stepdaughter Monica Herrera Rivera (and her husband Jose Rivera Alvarado).
His legacy also lives on through his grandchildren: William Cordova, Greg Cordova, Minda Cordova Martin (and her husband Dyllen Martin), and Mia Cordova; seven step-grandchildren: Mauro Reyes (and his wife Amy Reyes), Tanya Reyes, Jose Carlos and Alex Rivera, Gina Pendleton, Jennifer Gorea, Jacob Gorea, and Joseph Gorea; One great grandchildren Presley Martin, and four step-great grandchildren Andrea and Camila Vargas and Mauro James and Leo Anthony Reyes.
Sonny Cordova honorably served in the United States Army and attended Texas A & I University in Kingsville, Texas, and majored in Animal Husbandry. He worked the family farm/ranch that has proudly been in the Cordova family for approximately 100 years. Additionally, he worked for the Federal Government for over 30 years working for the Soil Conservation Service before joining the United States Immigration Service. He will be buried along side his wife Mona Cordova, son Paul P. Cordova, and parents Maria Flores Cordova and Pedro Cordova.
Pallbearers will be William Cordova, Greg Cordova, Dyllen Martin, Billy Vaughan, Charles “Trooper” Kone, and Bailey Holt
Honorary palbearers are Clemente Alaniz, Alejandro Avalos, Fernando Garcia, Mauro Reyes, Joe Garza, Mario Ramirez, Sheriff Tom Schmerber, Roel Urteaga,Jose Carlos Rivera, Alex Rivera, Jose Rivera, and Vicente Gonzalez.
Visitation will begin on Thursday, July 17, 2025 at 2pm-9pm with a Rosary at 7pm at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary followed by services on Friday, July 18, 2025 at 10AM at St. Josephs in La Pryor.
