Ernst Martin Graw

Ernst Martin Graw, born on June 17, 1938, in Crystal City, Texas, passed away on October 27, 2025, in Plano, Texas. He leaves behind a legacy that extends well beyond his years.

As a dedicated educator and music director, Ernst enjoyed a rewarding career that spanned several decades. His journey began at Van Horn, where he undertook his first job as a band director, followed by impactful tenures at Hondo High School, Uvalde High School, and Freer High School. At Freer, he inspired his students to achieve multiple honors, including recognition as the Best Playing Band, Best Flags, and Best Drum Major. His commitment to fostering talent culminated at Lytle High School, where he was celebrated for mentoring and strengthening the music program. In addition to his teaching roles, Ernst served as a regional judge for drum-major and twirling competitions across South Texas, showcasing his deep engagement with the music community.

His academic pursuits included graduating with honors from Uvalde High School in 1957, followed by studies at Sul Ross State Teachers College, where he focused on concert band music. Ernst earned a Master’s degree from Texas A&I University in Kingsville, further solidifying his expertise in education and music.

Ernst also had a fulfilling career beyond education, spending nearly two decades as a valued driver for the Texas Test Fleet in Devine, Texas. His diverse experiences reflected a lifelong passion for service and commitment to his community.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Ernst was deeply rooted in his faith and cherished the power of music. He was a longtime member of the Devine Church of Christ and frequently visited Getty Street Church of Christ in Uvalde with his mother, Flora. Known for his rich bass voice, he found profound joy in singing hymns, enriching the spiritual lives of those around him.

An avid coin collector, Ernst had a unique appreciation for the small pleasures of life, including his fondness for Arby’s curly fries. His adventurous spirit extended to aviation; he earned his pilot's license and took delight in flying Piper Cubs over the expansive South Texas countryside.

A proud Eagle Scout, Ernst was an inductee of the Order of the Arrow and recipient of the Boy Scout God and Country award. He served on the staff at Camp Fawcett in Barksdale, Texas, and Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico, and was an enthusiastic supporter of council camporees and national jamborees. He was an early member of the Sahawi Indian Dancers, embodying the values of leadership and community service throughout his life.

Ernst is survived by his brother, Julius Graw; two nieces and one nephew, Kathleen, Christopher, and Lorraine, who cherished him as Uncle Ernie and regarded him as the best uncle; a great-niece and a great-nephew; as well as countless former students, Scouts, and colleagues across South Texas who remember his dedication and compassion.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernst A. and Flora Graw, who were longtime residents of Uvalde.
