Mr. Ernen Haby, Sr. of Utopia passed away on September 28, 2020 at the age of 102. He was born in Selma, CA on April 22, 1918 to Tom and Cora Haby.
He married Gracia Belle Bassett of Uvalde in 1948. He later married Mary Cunningham of Utopia in 1997.
Mr. Haby grew up on a ranch in the Texas Hill Country and served 4 years in the Army in World War 2. He earned his bachelors and masters degrees from Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College in San Marcos. For many years he was a registrar at Ranger Junior College in Ranger Texas and at Wharton County Junior College in Wharton Texas. When he retired, he went back to doing his favorite thing, being a rancher.
He is survived by children Gracia Smaistrla and husband David, of Pearland, TX and Ernen Haby, Jr. and wife Cheri of Seattle, WA; grandchildren Amanda Hickernell and husband Jim of Seattle, WA and Douglas Haby and wife Michelle of Lemoore, CA; great-grandchildren June and Peyton Hickernell of Seattle, WA and Hudson and Madelyn Haby of Lemoore, CA. He is also survived by stepchildren Paulette Manning and husband Gary of Bandera, Rodger Cunningham and wife, Leslie of Atascosa, Rebecca Boyce and husband Everette of Bandera, Phyllis Deckert of San Antonio, Lewis Cunningham and wife Rachel of San Antonio and their families. He is also survived by niece Iona Alley of Utopia, nephew Dahl Howard and wife Gayle of Kerrville, and nephew Tom Howard and wife Barbara of Nacogdoches and their families.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at 10:00 am at Rushing Estes Knowles Mortuary in Sabinal. Pallbearers will be Austin Clary, Kenneth Clary, Ray King, David Rainey and Jody Ruthford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Utopia EMS, P.O.
