Donald Walker Merritt

Donald Walker Merrit, 90, of Uvalde, Texas passed away on August 28, 2026, at The Veranda.

He was born on September 15, 1935, in Rocksprings, Texas to Jewel (Matthews) and Halpon Merritt.

He married Shirley McClaughterty on December 16, 1967, in Uvalde, Texas.

He was a devoted Christian whose faith was not something he simply spoke about it was something he lived each and every day. God was always first in his life, and his love and devotion were evident in the way he served others. During the family’s annual reunion, he would often leave the gathering to return to Uvalde to preach or attend church, never allowing his commitment to God and his ministry to take a back seat. He attended Sul Ross University and graduated from the University of Texas. He dedicated 50 years to teaching at Southwest Texas Junior College, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students. He was a longtime member of Baptist Temple, where he faithfully served as a deacon for many years and taught Adult Sunday School. His greatest joy was ministering to others and sharing his faith, and he touched countless lives through his service. His life was a beautiful example of faith, service, and love for God and others.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Merrit of Uvalde; Melanie Spring-Medlin and husband, Jeff Medlin of Cypress; grandson, Hunter Medlin; brother, Rodney Merritt and wife, Gerilyn of Leakey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Baptist Temple Church. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
