Cruz Sonny Hernandez

Cruz A. “Sonny” Hernandez Jr., 88, of Uvalde, passed away on March 10, 2024, at Uvalde Healthcare and Rehabilitation.

He was born on June 29, 1935 in Uvalde to Frances (Aguirre) and Cruz Hernandez.

He married Eloisa Perez on April 19, 1959 in La Pryor, Texas.  

Sonny was a man of faith and put God first.  He constantly showed unconditional love for his family and made sure they knew how much they meant to him.  He was a hard worker that provided for his family and had a wonderful personality.  He was a compassionate, kind, selfless, influential and honorable man.  In addition to these characteristics, he always attempted to put smiles on people’s faces; his laughter and smile was infectious.  He absolutely loved spending time with family and friends; especially when it came to the three most important women in his life.  He shared a deep bond with his spouse, he provided love and guidance to his daughter and found immense joy in being a grandparent to his only grandchild; this was absolute happiness and fulfillment for him.  He left this world leaving a lasting impression on everyone he knew or came across in his lifetime.  He will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife Eloisa P. Hernandez of 63 years of Uvalde; daughter, Margot Mata and husband Carlos of Uvalde; granddaughter, Briana Andrea Mata of Uvalde; sister, Minerva Gonzales of Uvalde and brother, Alfredo Hernandez of Uvalde; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Lydia Velasquez, three brothers, Raul Hernandez, Rene Hernandez and Arturo Hernandez.

Pallbearers will be Joel Quijano Jr., Jacinto Quijano, Isay Nevarez, Arturo Hernandez Jr., Arnold Velasquez, Rafael Perez and Raul Perez.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, from 2:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a rosary at 7:00 pm and Wednesday, March 13, 2024, from 8:00 am to 9:00 pm with a rosary at 7:00 pm at Rushing Estes-Knowles Mortuary.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
