Alonzo D. Villarreal, Sr.

Alonzo De Leon Villarreal of Uvalde, TX, passed away on May 24, 2025 in Floresville, TX.

He was born and raised in Uvalde and lived here his entire life except for the last 3 years while he was in nursing home care at the Frank M. Tejeda Texas State Veterans Home in Floresville, TX.

He is survived by Santos Lopez Villarreal, his wife of almost 75 years, and their only child Alonzo Villarreal, Jr. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Virjinia Maria Villarreal Cortez (and husband Richard Cortez) and Carolina Ester Villarreal Cortez (and her husband Martin Cortez) and his great-granddaughter Sofia Villarreal and great-grandson Andrew Cortez.

He was an electrician and electrical contractor by trade.

He was also the first Latino City Councilman for the City of Uvalde and served during the 1960’s.

He was a proud and longtime active member of the local American Legion Tomas Valle Post 479. Mr. Villarreal was a proud army man and carried his military legacy into his support for the local American Legion. He was a leader, and he had enormous pride in Mexican art and culture as well as his Mexican cultural heritage (and dancing to Tejano Music). Alonzo D. Villarreal was avid in his love of hunting and fishing. And he loved his dogs.

He is also survived by his three sisters Mary Savage of Dallas, TX, Yolanda Zamora of Houston, TX and Rosalinda Ramirez of Dallas, TX.

He was predeceased by sisters Irene Arredondo and Ella V. Brown and brothers Alfonso Villarreal, Arturo Villarreal, Alfredo Villarreal and Jose Villarreal.

Mr. Villarreal was one of nine brothers and sisters (being in the middle at number 5).

As his sister fondly remembers, he was a practical joker with an enthusiastic sense of humor, having once put a plastic lizard in her bed. His sister Yolanda recalled that she jumped out of bed and began screaming and left their mother wondering why she was screaming. Of course it was a fake lizard.

He and his wife Santos L. Villarreal were strong supporters of education which led their son to attend fine universities such as: Rice University in Houston, TX, Trinity University in San Antonio, TX, The University of Texas at Austin School of Law in Austin, TX, and The University of Texas at San Antonio Graduate School of Business.

Mr. Villarreal was affectionately referred to as Chapito by family and friends alike.

He is also survived by his nephew Joe Villarreal, his niece Estella Villarreal and nephew Alfredo Villarreal.
