Abelardo Jeu Romero, 95, passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 surrounded by family in San Antonio, Texas. He was born on July 4, 1930, in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas to Maria (Sarmiento) and Marcelino B. Romero. Abelardo was the last surviving sibling of the Romero Sarmiento family.
The formal education he received in Mexico in accounting and financing opened opportunities for him when he moved to the United States. Abelardo was a devout Catholic, a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #3245, member of the Evanjelización, and experienced his Cursillo in the late 70s. He was a man of faith.
He married Esperanza Rodriguez on January 11, 1953, in Piedras Negras, Coahuila. Abelardo and Esperanza had 12 children, ✝Jesus, Maria, Hope, Sylvia, Marcelino, Ruben, Martin, Lupe, Rene, Rolando, ✝Enrique, and Jorge. His family was his most valued possession. He worked hard all his life, sometimes holding two jobs to provide for his family. He instilled the importance of education, work ethics, and the value of family upon his children.
He is survived by his loving wife, Esperanza Romero with whom he shared 72 years of his life, four daughters, Maria Romero and partner, Lydia Bosquez of San Antonio, Hope Silva and husband, Joel of Westlake Village, CA, Sylvia Romero of San Antonio, and Lupe Casanova and husband, Omar of San Antonio; six sons, Marcelino Romero and wife, Adriana of Atlanta, GA, Ruben Romero and wife, Irma of San Antonio, Martin Romero of Lakehills, Rene Romero and wife, Julie of Uvalde, Rolando Romero and wife, Diana of San Antonio, and Jorge Romero and wife, Valerie of Uvalde; sister, Esmeralda De Hoyos and husband, Raul of Uvalde; 21 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-granddaughter.
Abelardo was a man who lived a long full life. His quick wit, sense of humor and fondness for strawberry ice cream will be cherished memories. He will be missed by many.
The family would like to thank numerous people who assisted in the care of Abelardo during the last stage of his life, including the wonderful employees of New Life Hospice.
He is preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Jesus Abelardo Romero, Enrique Romero; great grandson, Xander Rene Romero; 8 brothers; and 1 sister.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, October 2, 2025, from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, October 3, 2025, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Aaron Silva, Ian Silva, Daniel Padilla, Noah Colon, Jesus Romero, Gabriel Casanova, Rolando Romero, Carlos Ramos.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Nicholas Romero, Cooper Silva, Matthew Alcorta, Urijah Colon, Michael Garza, Connor Garza.
